This course is designed for health and care professionals who handle or administer medicines as part of their role and need to refresh their knowledge or build confidence in working with controlled drugs.
By the end of the session, attendees will have a solid understanding of current legislation, drug schedules and classifications, safe storage, labelling requirements, prescription standards, and the correct processes for administration and documentation. The training supports safe, lawful, and accountable practice in any care setting.

Definition and legal and ethical responsibilities of CD’s

Prescription, supply, possession and record keeping.

Storage, administration, records and disposal of Control Drugs

Regulations should be regarded as a minimum standard for the storage

Safe procedure for giving controlled drugs

Minimising potential for a drug error

Record keeping of all controlled drug administration, especially when the community nurse

The CD register should also include the balance of CDs remaining

Reporting and recording protocol of all discrepancies, incidents and errors
