
About the Course
This Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) training course is designed for residential and community‑based healthcare professionals supporting individuals living with the effects of brain injury. The session provides a clear understanding of the different types of acquired brain injuries, their causes, severity, and the wide‑ranging impact they can have on cognition, behaviour, emotions, and daily functioning.
By the end of the course, attendees will have a stronger grasp of their responsibilities, legal considerations, and the role they play in supporting rehabilitation. The training also explores practical strategies to enhance communication, manage behavioural changes, and promote person‑centred recovery.

The syllabus includes:
The brain: composition and function Understanding key structures and how injury affects neurological processes
Types and causes of Acquired Brain Injury Trauma, hypoxia, infection, stroke, and other contributing factors
Effects of trauma Physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural consequences
Behavioural and emotional changes Recognising, understanding, and responding to altered behaviours
Supportive strategies Practical approaches to communication, engagement, and daily support
