Huntington’s Disease Awareness Training
This Huntington’s Disease Awareness training course has been developed to support HCAs, residential care staff, and domiciliary care workers in understanding and working effectively alongside individuals living with Huntington’s Disease. The session provides essential knowledge about the genetic nature of the condition, how it progresses, and the impact it can have on movement, cognition, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing.
Participants will explore how Huntington’s Disease affects both individuals and their families, and will learn practical, person‑centred strategies to enhance communication, promote independence, and manage changing needs with empathy and confidence. The course aims to build awareness, reduce uncertainty, and strengthen the quality of care provided across all settings.
Course Content
The syllabus includes:
Understanding Huntington’s Disease What it is, how it develops, and how it affects the brain
Causes and genetic factors Exploring inheritance patterns and risk
Symptoms and progression Physical, cognitive, behavioural, and emotional changes over time
The role of the carer Supporting daily living, communication, and wellbeing
Person‑centred approaches Promoting dignity, autonomy, and meaningful engagement
Treatments and support options Current interventions, therapies, and multidisciplinary input
