Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Training
This Parkinson’s Disease Awareness training course equips residential care staff, domiciliary care workers, and HCAs with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to support individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. The session is suitable for all care settings, including nursing homes, assisted living, and community‑based services.
Participants will explore the symptoms, progression, and daily challenges associated with Parkinson’s, gaining insight into how the condition affects mobility, swallowing, communication, and overall independence. The course emphasises person‑centred care, medication awareness, and strategies that promote dignity, safety, and quality of life.
Delegates will develop a deeper understanding of the causes and characteristics of Parkinson’s disease and learn how to apply supportive approaches that enhance empathy and confidence in practice.
Course Content
The syllabus includes:
Addressing the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease Understanding how symptoms affect daily living and wellbeing
Applying a person‑centred approach Tailoring support to individual needs, preferences, and abilities
Guidelines for activities of daily living Supporting mobility, swallowing, communication, and independence
Preventing distress behaviours Approaches to reduce hitting, biting, wandering, and agitation
Meaningful activity and daily structure Encouraging engagement, purpose, and emotional wellbeing
Improving quality of life Supporting both individuals with Parkinson’s and their carers
Mental Capacity Act application Understanding decision‑making, consent, and best‑interest considerations
