Course Information

This IV Cannulation training course is designed for healthcare staff involved in patient care where intravenous access is required for medication administration, fluid therapy, or blood sampling. The session provides a structured, supportive environment for delegates to develop their theoretical understanding and practise the skill safely before performing cannulation in the workplace.

 

This is a hands‑on, practical course, and active participation is encouraged throughout all demonstrations and simulated activities. On successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of attendance and will be required to achieve full competency under clinical supervision within their own organisation.

  • NMC Code of Conduct: Professional standards and accountability

  • Patient identification and consent: Ensuring safety, accuracy, and informed decision‑making

  • Legal and professional responsibilities: Scope of practice and organisational governance

  • Universal precautions: Infection prevention and control principles

  • The vascular system: Understanding arteries, veins, valves, and anatomical considerations

  • Indications for cannulation: When and why IV access is required

  • The cannulation procedure: Site selection, preparation, equipment, insertion, maintenance, and removal

  • Calculating drip rates: Safe and accurate infusion management

  • Infection control: Aseptic technique and prevention of complications

  • Potential complications: Recognition, management, and escalation

  • Simulated workstation and clinical oversight: Practical skills development with guided supervision (practical session only)
